A weighbridge is a heavy-duty industrial weighing system used to measure the weight of vehicles such as trucks, trailers, and containers along with their loaded or unloaded goods. It is commonly used in industries like transportation, logistics, agriculture, mining, factories, and warehouses. The main purpose of a weighbridge is to ensure accurate weighing, prevent overloading, maintain safety on roads, and support fair trade practices.

How Does a Weighbridge Work

A weighbridge works by using electronic sensors called load cells that are installed beneath the weighing platform. When a vehicle drives completely onto the platform, its weight creates pressure on the load cells. These load cells convert the force into electrical signals. The signals are then sent to a weighing indicator, which processes the data and displays the total weight on a digital screen or computer system. The system can measure gross weight, tare weight, and net weight, and it can also store records or print weigh slips for documentation.

Types of Weighbridges

There are several types of weighbridges based on installation, technology, and construction. A pit-type weighbridge is installed in a concrete pit, allowing the platform to remain level with the ground. This type is suitable for areas with limited space and provides smooth vehicle movement without ramps. A pitless weighbridge, also known as a surface-mounted weighbridge, is installed above ground and uses ramps for vehicle access. It requires less civil work and is easier to maintain.

Based on technology, electronic weighbridges are widely used today because they offer high accuracy, fast results, and digital data management. Mechanical weighbridges are older systems that rely on mechanical levers and are now mostly replaced due to lower accuracy and higher maintenance needs. In terms of construction material, steel weighbridges are lightweight, quick to install, and easy to relocate, while concrete weighbridges are highly durable and ideal for permanent installations with long service life.
